Appetizers Are A Great Way To Get A Party Going

Little appetizers have a big role to play when it comes to successful entertaining. The right appetizers often can set the tone for a truly memorable cocktail or dinner party. Unfortunately, some timid cooks have been content to stick with chilled shrimp or cocktail wieners, but now's the time to learn how to make some classic appetizers for real zest and zing at the next party.

Begin by considering the kind of theme the party has: Italian, Asian, Southwestern? Then start searching cookbooks and online references for appetizers that will express these different cuisines. See more of vegetarian appetizers for parties.

Some Asian foods have become classic appetizers that bridge any kind of theme. One of these is the delectable Crab Rangoon; a wonton filled with creamed crabmeat and then fried. Now granted, the full process for making Crab Rangoon can be daunting for a first-time appetizer chef. Making the filling by mixing crabmeat with cream cheese and then adding minced onions and garlic along with soy sauce is the easy part.

Crab Rangoon- A Classic Appetizer
The real trick to Crab Rangoon, however, is learning how to wrap up the wonton, a Chinese style dough wrapper that resembles the phyllo dough used to make Greek dishes such as baklava and spinach pie. Wonton usually comes in diamond shapes that are folded in half to create triangles, like a mini turnover. To create one Crab Rangoon, you need to put a heaping tablespoon of the creamed crab into the middle and spread it out. Then you have to moisten the edges of the wonton with water using a fingertip, fold it together and seal the edges, remoistening if necessary. These little triangles should be kept in a damp paper towel until it's time to deep-fry them. The result is mouth-watering deliciousness!

For Something Simpler...
For something a little simpler, you may want to try the Italian appetizer known as Bruschetta. This favorite is made by chopping together tomatoes and basil and then combining them with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a small bowl. This mixture should stand for about 30 minutes. It is now ready to top a loaf of toasted French bread that has browned on both sides for extra crunch. Bruschetta is served warm, sometimes with Parmesan cheese added, for a delectable combination.

Of course, you can always resort to sliced vegetables known as crudites with salad dressings, or crackers and cheese. Every once in a while, though, you really ought to try something familiar yet a little more challenging, such as sweet and sour meatballs.

For this version, the meatballs are made as usual by mixing hamburger with milk, salt, egg, breadcrumbs, onions and Worcestershire sauce. After the meatballs are browned and drained of fat, the cook prepares a sauce of brown sugar, cornstarch, pineapple, vinegar and soy sauce. When this mixture boils in a skillet, the meatballs are returned along with chopped green peppers and simmered until the peppers are tender. The combination of sweet and sour flavors in these appetizers will thrill guests.

How Long to Cook Chicken Wings

People really love to eat chicken wings. There are so many ways to prepare chicken wings and they make fantastic vegetarian appetizers for parties and party foods. One of the questions I am often asked is, "How long to cook chicken wings".

http://perdue.com/recipes/recipeimages/Chicken%20and%20Vegetable%20Stir%20Fry_1.jpg

Chicken wings can be cooked using several different methods. I prefer deep frying wings but you can also pan fry your wings or bake them. Let's take a look at each method and you can decide for yourself which method is best for you.

Before you cook your chicken wings you will need to make sure they are completely thawed. This can be accomplished by letting them sit in the refrigerator for a day or two before cooking. When you are ready to cook your wings, rinse them in cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel.
If you will be deep frying your chicken wings be sure they are dry before placing them in the hot oil to avoid painful splatters. Heat your oil to 375 degrees. Once the oil is hot you can begin cooking your wings. Fill the fryer basket with a single layer of wings. You want the oil to just cover the wings when lowered into the oil. Lower the wings into the oil slowly and cook for 12 to 15 minutes. This will make a nicely browned chicken wing that is crispy on the outside and juicy and tender inside.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0y4mUJfZDV_UqpI8QQ3JU8Pdqi85thz_31okTsr90rBCh7m6erLDHgNV3Hen70KiUdHGflwATmAnyWyMOhe9ZM-x7i62W72cJ2d_8r2quiz5lAyYsTkAsWQNNCAuhZf1KM5ZDTMI2NlX-/s1600/ChickenWings.jpg

You may also opt to pan fry your wings if you do not have a deep fryer. This would be my second choice. Use a large frying pan for this method. Pour enough oil in the pan to cover the bottom. Heat the oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot place your wings in a single layer into the hot oil. Cook the wings for 6 to 7 minutes and then turn them over to cook for another 6 to 7 minutes. You could also use a wok to fry your wings. This will also make a nice crispy outside and tender inside.

My least favorite method of cooking chicken wings is to bake them. Baking them is a much healthier alternative to all of the frying but the wings will not be nearly as crispy. However if you need to bake your wings heat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the wings in a glass baking dish that has been coated with a little non-stick cooking spray. Bake the wings for about 30 to 40 minutes. You want to be sure the juices run clear from the wings.

Well there you go three methods to cook chicken wings. Always remember to wash your hands and all utensils when working with raw chicken. Enjoy those tasty little treats.

Creating Classic Appetizers

Appetizers or "hors d'oeuvres" as the French call them are the perfect food item to serve before the main course meal. They are great to satisfy your guests while you finish preparing dinner. They are also perfect if you are having a party. When planning a party you need to think ahead. How many guests are you going to have? Where are you going to have your party? Thinking ahead will allow you to prepare the perfect appetizers to make your guests mouths water with delight.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3_PId3kjhEY/TDuUuHTYWuI/AAAAAAAAAPo/TowdFEGbq4s/s1600/CIMG3493.JPG

If you are having an outdoor party and you have a grill, it is fun to make spicy buffalo chicken wings. You can marinate them the night before in a large zip-lock bag and then when you are ready to start cooking you can just throw them on the grill as is. Another fun idea is to make kabobs. You can take large shrimp, cherry tomatoes, green peppers and onion and marinate them in Italian dressing the night before as well. Then just like the buffalo chicken wings you can just throw them on the grill right next to each other. Doing things the night before takes a lot of pressure and stress off of entertaining and allows you to concentrate on the dishes that must be prepared on the spot.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9WfLRtvPml0/SXzk_Owje_I/AAAAAAAABUY/r4eJWu8bngI/s400/Winger%27s+Sticky+Fingers.JPG

If you are having a formal party you definitely don't want to serve any appetizers that are messy like the chicken wings. You'd feel badly if your guest's sticky fingers got on their formal attire. Serving things like frittatas, hot artichoke dip, pesto stuffed mushrooms and savory chicken satay would be more appropriate and elegant.

There are many appetizer for parties types to choose from depending on the atmosphere of your party. There are dips and spreads, finger foods, make-ahead munchies, snack mixes, quesadillas and cheese platters. One of my favorite appetizers that is easy and so much fun for my guests is cheese fondue. You can serve it with anything that you would love to smother in cheese.
